Colorado donor groups are working to close racial differences in who gets organ transplants
People of color are left behind at every stage of the organ transplant process, but donor groups and transplant centers in Colorado are trying to fill those gaps.
Dr. Sixto Giusti, director of the Hispanic Transplant Program at UCHealth, said when Hispanic patients are referred for treatment, they tend to be more advanced in the disease process, making it harder to prevent the need for extreme measures like a transplant. This, combined with language barriers, mistrust of the healthcare system, practical concerns like transportation, and perhaps doctors’ perceptions of who can and cannot handle the rigorous transplant process, all contribute to poorer outcomes, he said.
